Obadiah Stane/Iron Monger Print E-mail

Obadiah Stane was a cruel and pitiless businessman who built his financial empire by mercilessly crushing his enemies. Contrary to most other IM villains, he did not attack the armored hero, but rather the man behind the iron mask, Tony Stark himself. Obsessed by the game of chess, Stane knows how to use his enemy's weaknesses to his advantage; in Stark's case, his alcoholism. Stane launched an undeclared psychological war on Tony Stark, causing his downfall and allowing him to take control of his company that became known as "Stane International." After being reduced to being a homeless drunk, Stark finally conquered his addiction and found a new company with his friends Jim Rhodes, Morley and Clymnestria Erwin. Refusing to allow his rival to make a comeback, Stane had a bomb planted at Stark's new company, causing the death of Morley and seriously wounding Rhodey. Stark was forced to don his new "Silver Centurion" armor to put an end once and for all to Stane's threat. Despite the power of the Iron Monger armor Stane was wearing during the battle, he was finally defeated by Stark and immediately after committed suicide before Tony's horrified eyes.

The Iron Monger armor also appeared in the pages of IM #212 and #253, although the guys in the suit(s) didn't call themselves "Iron Monger."

First ever & IM appearance (Stane): Iron Man #163; (Iron Monger): Iron Man #198 (in background).
