Madame Masque Print E-mail

Raised a rich financier, Whitney Frost learned after her father's death that she had been adopted and was in fact the daughter of Count Nefaria, a European criminal mastermind. After the revelation, her fiancé left her because her origins were incompatible with his political career. She then returned to her true father who trained her and whom she finally replaced at the head of the criminal organisation known as the Maggia. Betrayed by her own men, she attempted to flee the authorities but in her haste, her escape vehicle crashed. Her face now horribly scarred, she was rescued by the crimelord known as Midas, who gave her the golden masque that she now always wears.

After she broke ties with Midas, she attempted to leave her life of crime behind and became romantically involved with Tony Stark. But the relationship came to an abrupt end when Iron Man, whom she knew to be her lover, accidentally killed Count Nefaria during a battle. In the following years, she reassumed control of the Maggia and had powerful robots called Dreadnoughts built to fight Iron Man.

Madame Masque then became romantically involved with one of Stark's deadliest enemies, Obadiah Stane. They elaborated a ploy together with the help of a brilliant scientist. They kidnapped Bethany Cabe, another of Stark's old flames, and managed to switch the two women's personalities. Frost now inhabited Cabe's body and vice-versa. She was then able to approach the unsuspecting Stark and attempted to kill him while Cabe became a fugitive from the law. The conspiracy was finally foiled thanks in part to the resourcefulness of Bethany Cabe (IM #203).

After her escape, Madame Masque built herself a new hideout in the Nevada desert from which she took control of all criminal activities in the Southwestern United States. She engineered clones of herself and even had some of them murdered so the authorities would find the bodies and believe her dead. She finally resurfaced when her father, Count Nefaria, came back from the dead as an ionic being and attacked his daughter's refuge to retake control of the Maggia. Thanks to the help of the Avengers, Nefaria was stopped and long feud between Madame Masque and Iron Man appears to finally be at an end (Avengers vol. 3 #31-34).

First IM Appearance: Tales of Suspense #97.
