When Iron Man's friend
Happy Hogan was gravely injured during Shellhead's
first tussle with the Titanium Man,
there was only one way to save his life -- an experimental
cobalt-powered device that Tony Stark had invented
to stimulate regeneration of damaged body tissue. The untested device did dave
Happy's life -- but it also mutated him into a giant,
mindless humanoid creature!
Years later, Eddie
March, a substitute Iron
Man, also had to be exposed to the cobalt ray to
save his life, and he too became the Freak (IM
#67)! After Happy again became the Freak (IM
#84) after he stood in as Iron Man for
Tony (again), Tony vowed never to use the cobalt device again.
