Professor Nathan Garrett
assumed the identity of his ancestor, the Black Knight, who had served
King Arthur in the Middle Ages.
But unlike his ancestor, Garrett used his alter ego for a life a crime!
Garrett, a genetics engineer, mutated a horse
and gave it huge, bat-like wings that enabled it to fly. His lance contained
deadly laser beams as well as many other types of modern weaponry.
The Black Knight fought against
Shellhead by his lonesome, and against the Avengers as a member of the Masters of Evil (first seen in Avengers vol. 1 #6).
Garrett eventually perished in battle with the Golden
Avenger, and later, ironically it was Garrett's
nephew Dane Whitman who
assumed the guise of the Black Knight -- but this time as a hero and Avenger!
