By some unrecorded method, Attuma was endowed with strength far surpassing that of his people, the Atlanteans. Attuma learned of a prophecy, in the lost Atlantean Chronicles, of a conqueror who would take the empire of Atlantis by force. Believing himself to be that conqueror, Attuma moved to a position of leadership over his barbaric brethren, and launched an attack on the city of Atlantis and its ruler, Prince Namor, also known as the Sub-Mariner.
Attuma came into conflict with Shellhead when IM was testing Stark Industries' new "mini-sub." IM, in the sub, is spotted by Attuma's guards, and they fire on him. Ditching his craft, IM stumbles upon the Atlantean barbarian's latest plot to conquer the planet -- a huge gun that will fire a shell containing "nautlilium," which will fuse with the oxygen in the atmosphere making the surface air roughly the density of water! Yikes! The two tussle a bit, and when it looks like 'Tuma will manage to fire off the shell, IM (who has gotten back to his sub) high-speeds his newest invention smack into the big nautilium gun! Whew!
