Originally recruited and outfitted by the Organizer (an old enemy of Daredevil; see DD #10), these four criminals and crooks were later given special powers by Count Nefaria’s scientists. They were given costumes and abilities similar to their animal namesake. Ape-Man (Gordon Keefer) was given superhuman strength; Cat-Man (Townshend Horgan) received superhuman agility; Frog-Man (François Leblanc, a Frenchman, how creative) had Olympic-level leaping ability; and, finally Bird-Man (Henry Hawk) had wings that allowed him to fly.
The Ani-Men then assisted Nefaria in his takeover of the North American Air Defense Command at Cheyenne Mountain, only to be defeated by the X-Men (Uncanny X-Men #s 94-95). They were taken into custody but soon escaped.
Nefaria also escaped from the custody of the Avengers and contacted his Ani-Men who found his daughter, Madame Masque, for him. Nefaria then had the Ani-Men attack his daughter’s lover, Tony Stark. The four original Ani-Men were then killed by an exploding bomb that was intended to assassinate Stark (IM #116).
First ever appearance: Daredevil #10. First IM appearance: Iron Man #115.

 In order: Ape-Man, Bird-Man, Cat-Man and Frog-Man.
