Comic-Con Iron Man Movie Wrap-Up
The 2007 San Diego Comic-Con is over and was bigger than ever with approximately 120,000 people showing up over the 4 1/2 day event! Unexpectedly, the biggest movie buzz award went to... Iron Man!I say unexpected because although here at Advanced Iron we've been excited about the film for some time and it had gotten some mainstream press coverage, no one (including Paramount) expected the wild reaction to trailer that was shown at the event. Before the footage was first revealed last Thursday, crowd reaction was good, but not great when director Jon Favreau asked who would be attending the Marvel presentation on Saturday where footage from the movie would be shown. He suprised the crowd by showing the footage at that very same presentation (Paramount's panel) and when the footage finished showing the crowd went insane! Zine Editor-in-Chief John Comerford and I attended the Con. John's attendance was last minute as he lives in Chicago and hadn't planned on going until he was contacted at the 11th hour by Mr. Favreau himself. Everyone was talking about the trailer, and by the time Saturday afternoon's presentation rolled around the 6,500 seat conference room was completely full and the trailer was met with the same wildly enthusiastic reaction from those in attendance.
Last year at the Comic-Con the movie 300 was the big buzz winner and this year without a doubt it was Iron Man that took the title. Here at A.I. we were hoping the movie would do well, but it actually looks like it may end up being one of the biggest hits of 2008.
We'll have our interview with Jon Favreau up soon, but here's a partial summary of what came out of the Con regarding Iron Man... Photos of the Iron Man Mark I armor Videos from the Comic-Con (NOT the trailer yet, sorry!) Latest movie poster unveiled at the Con They are planning on a trilogy of movies and everyone is signed on for three films if the first one is successful. In one of the subsequent films, Terrence Howard will be suiting up as War Machine and the cybernetic component of the armor will affect his mind in a bad way. Iron Man's nemesis The Mandarin has NOT been ignored, although he will not be a primary presence in the first film. He is actually quite important to the three-movie story arc. The video game based on the movie looks very cool. Although this is a big budget superhero flick, it is very much character-driven. After speaking with some of the primary castmembers it's clear that they have a good grasp of the characters they're portraying, in particular I'd say this about Robert Downey Jr. and Terrence Howard. We'll keep you posted as additional news comes out. Vic Holtreman Publisher & Webmaster - Advanced Iron |
