Mark 18: The Safe Armor Print E-mail
Armor Specs: Mark 18

The Iron Man 'Safe' Armor
Iron Man - The 'Safe' Armor
Nickname: The Safe Armor; The Sentient Armor
Designer: Anthony Stark
Worn by: Anthony Stark, Itself
Appeared: Iron Man vol. 3 #15

Design Notes :

Shell Composition:
A radical new design, the armor shell would no longer retract into the armor components like before due to the insulation now incorporated. Tony has redesigned the armor from scratch. The servo links, the circuitry the power systems, everything.  Fundamentally the suit is the same as before, it is simply now more health conscious in it's design.  However due to the insulation in the armor, the armor no longer can fit in an attaché case like before. Instead it can fold into a compact form and be stored in the trunk of Tony Stark's car. The armor can be called to him via a control unit in his watch and floats to him via anti gravity units.  The suit then unfolds and expands to regular size and can stand on it's own with limited remote and voice activated functions, so as to preserver Tony's secret identity of being Iron Man. When he needs to suit up, the suit enfolds over him and locks into place.

Power Source and Energy Information: Beta Particle Generator and Solar power converters, and Laser Absorption Grid.

Control Systems Interface: Cybernetic Interface combined with visual menu overlays with visual tracking system.

Weaponry:
*Repulsors: (Presumed to be Mark 3, possibly Mark 4) Laser-guided particle beam emission units mounted in the palm of each hand.
*Unibeam: (Presumed to be Mark 3, possibly Mark 4) Multi-band light and force beam emitter. Can be adjusted for a variety of effects such as search light, heat beams, tractor beam, lasers, image inducers, ultraviolet light, and electromagnetic pulse.
*Pulse Bolt Generators: Plasma discharges that build in intensity as they travel through the atmosphere, picking up static and ambient energy.
*Force Shield: A focused photon emitter on the back of his left wrist that shapes into a shield. (This weapon was never used in this armor but is presumed to be standard issue for Iron Man armor since the Armor Wars)
*Electromagnetic Pulse.  (This weapon was never used in this armor but is presumed to be standard issue for Iron Man armor since the Armor Wars.)

Equipment:
*Life Support Equipment: The eye and mouth hole slits could be sealed. The suit had a supply of air to last about an hour. Also as with majority of Iron Man armors, this model has underwater pressure tolerances of approximately 2000 feet, and has limited space capabilities.
*Boot Jets: uses high-speed triple-source turbines located in the boots.
*Force Field: By expanding the field that keeps the armor rigid, the armor can encase itself in a protective force field that is effective against most forms of attack. He can also used this field to polarize the armor to either attract or repulse other items of magnetic polarity. The armor can temporarily surround itself with a force field that greatly increases its protection from attacks. While the force field is engaged, the armor is unable to use any other systems.
*Voice Distortion Unit.
*Absorption Field Grid: Embedded in the surface of the armor is an absorption grid. It is able to absorb energy from attacks or surrounding power sources to recharge the armor or redirect into the weapons systems.
*Thermocouple: able to absorb heat attacks and convert heat energy to usable energy for the armor.
*Protected Senses: The armor contains ear protectors to baffle incoming noise greater than 70 decibels. Similarly, blinding lights trigger polarized lenses in the helmet's eye slots.
*Tractor and Repulsor Beam: Using magnetism, the armor can generate a tractor and repulsor field.
*Language Translator: The computer in his armor is able to translate to and from English and many of Earth's more popular languages.
*Anti-Theft Device: The armor is protected from anybody analyzing or duplicating the circuits in the armor. Once tripped, the security circuits melt the interior of the armor to slag. A few minutes later, the armor explodes to destroy itself.
*Built-in Fire Extinguisher.
*Sonic Array.

Sensors:  Universal-Band two-way Radio. Also contains x-ray and MRI scanning equipment plus radar and sonar.  Also an enhanced targeting computer system to guide his aim when using weaponry. Targeting computer can be set to auto fire weapons in extreme situations.

Special Notation:  This armor only became sentient through a unique set of circumstances that likely won't happen again.  Iron Man had saved the life of the former Avenger, Jocasta, an artificially intelligent robot that was presumed destroyed. However Tony's old foe Sunset Bain, who at times calls herself Madame Menace, had the deactivated head of Jocasta and contracted Tony Stark to break the security codes and access the artificial intelligence contained within. Tony recognized the code as Jocasta and reactivated her, then became Iron Man and after a fierce battle with the evil War Machine and Sunset Bain's automated defenses, Iron Man was able to download Jocasta into his armor before she was destroyed. Upon arrival at Stark House, Iron Man uploaded her into the mainframe system of Stark House. Jocasta was saved and is now an integral part of Stark House's computer systems. However what Tony failed to realize was that despite the fact he programmed in safe guards that were supposed to keep his armor from gaining sentience, the software in his armor was corrupted by Jocasta's presence. Also it is likely a residue of Jocasta was left behind during the transfer.  Some time later on New Year's Eve, Iron Man was engaged in battle with the villain Whiplash. Whiplash was using an electrical whip that was channeling electricity into Iron Man and damaging his armor. The attack also sparked a mild heart attack in Tony Stark. During their battle a bolt of lightning struck Iron Man, stunning them both. At the same time, the clock struck midnight and it was now the year 2000.  The damaged software in the armor, any residue of Jocasta left behind, the electrical charge and Y2K all combined to bring the armor to life. At first it tapped into the injured and unconscious mind of Tony Stark and made him live his nightmares as it learned. Upon awakening to find it was a dream, Tony was shocked to learn his armor was alive.

Later at Stark house, Jocasta diagnosed the armor as being alive. Tony was at first determined to deactivate it, but the armor convinced him of the benefits of their working together. At first Tony was convinced to try to work with the still evolving sentience, and Whiplash attacked. Tony and the armor merged and fought Whiplash with Tony primarily in control. However the armor took over and brutalized Whiplash to learn who hired him. The armor then killed Whiplash much to Tony's horror.

Later at Stark house, the two argued, with Tony taking the position that Iron Man doesn't kill. However the armor pointed out that Tony had no problems at first with trying to shut the armor down for good. The armor then took control of Stark house and shut Jocasta down stating that he and Tony needed time to talk things through. After having Tony chase Rumiko Fujikawa away, the two took off to see the man who Whiplash stated had hired him. The armor went berserk in the man's office and Tony was able to restrain it. The two then left, and Tony took the armor to Whiplash's funeral in an effort to teach it that killing was wrong. The armor was also running low on power and Tony noticed this and attempted to stall the armor so it would run out of power. The armor insisted on returning to Stark House where it claimed it was going to download data to assimilate Tony's lesson, but Tony knew better. As it recharged the armor had to shut down and Jocasta quickly opened a storage unit that contained the old Iron Man modular armor. Tony quickly donned it and the armor went mad with jealousy. Tony was easily beaten and the armor took him to a deserted island that Tony owned and left him there. The armor was still mastering its emotions and hated yet loved it's creator. Tony refused to become one with the armor again and the armor nearly killed him then left him there as it answered an Avengers distress call. Tony set up traps in the meantime, determined to go down fighting. The two fought and Tony was injured, and began suffering a fatal heart attack. He told the armor to kill him so that he could die like a man, but instead the armor plunged it's own hand into it's chest and tore a device out. The device attached itself to Tony's chest and stopped his heart attack.

The armor then died and Tony radioed for help and buried the armor, marking the grave "HERE LIES IRON MAN, AVENGER" thereby honoring the armor. Upon arrival at home, Jocasta examined him, and revealed that his heart was apparently replaced by the sentient armor's heart itself! Tony was horrified at first and Jocasta then revealed that the heart doesn't have an internal power supply. This further shocked Tony, who later began to adjust to what had happened.

However the armor may not be dead for long. After he left, the Sons of Yinsen who had retrieved the lost brain of Professor Yinsen (the man who helped Tony create the armor in the first place) were seen going to the island where the armor was buried.
