Well, lets see... first OMG GRAVITON IS DEAD! Dear god, did not see that one coming. So falls one of the most powerful villains in Marvel history... by his own hands errr.... powers. You know what I mean.
His last words.... "I was human once..." I wonder if that's a recent thing or he realized how much of a monster he's become since he got his powers.

The anklet blocking the Extremis powers, plus the mandatory vacation from SHIELD? Great way to increase the tension by bringing Tony down to Earth.

The Mandarin's manipulation for everything... GENIUS! It's some pretty great villainy right there. Oh sooo good. Is it just me, or does he use that mind control on his own minions more than his enemies? I suppose its easier when you only have to nudge them rather than turn them all the way around...

Such a good issue! Even if there's very little real action in it...

Doc Samson's orders. It was made by Xavier using Shi'ar technology, originally designed to stop psychic powers and modified for Extremis. Basically Tony was given the option of "wear the anklet or spend some time in 42". It's nice to see that IM supports registration even when it hurts him though. That's the real test, do you still support a law when oit's used against you.

Thanks for the recap, but there's still some gaps in the why's and what's.... I'll have to pick the issue up as soon as I can!

I really liked this issue too; I don't know what's causing Tony's dementia, and the way he looked in the last panel of the issue suggests that he's just as obsessive even without his new powers. I know that Tony's had mental lapses before ( his extreme second descent into alcoholism, his actions when influenced by Kang/Immortus ), but it's never been this bad. Doc Samson should have done more than just put that anklet on Tony, because just getting rid of his Extremis abilities doesn't attend to what's really eating at him.

Then again, as they say, " A paranoid is someone with all the facts "...

CLASS ONE SPOILER ALERT FOR I.M ISSUE #23.

Although the pace of this issue is slow as a month of Sundays but that's okay, it's still (perhaps because of the methodical, procedural pace) a ripper of a yarn that promises more to come.

Y'know, I appreciate the impact that Gadget's death has had upon Tony...it's quite touching without being mawkish.
I liked the way the cover cpatured this...

Tem Borjigin...which in Genghis Khan terms is a little bit like Dracula trying to fool people with an alias like Doctor Alucard...good to see Mandy hasn't lost his martial arts expertise! Oh. My. God!!! He has his rings pierced along his spinal column! Whewwwww.  Shocked And he has Jedi mind tricks. The fiend! And telling Maya "If I told you I'd have to kill you"...brrrr.

This Death-By-Implosion M.O is sure a mean way to die....and a bizaare contrast to the way Gravitron killed himself.

I don't know if anyone could really trust a mere anklet, no matter who built it, to baffle an ubertech like Tony Stark for long...but I guess it's the set up to trot out a classic non-digital armour so good-o!

Mandarin has always had Jedi mind tricks (one of his rings gives him minor mind control powers), its just been woefully underused until now. If you look back at issue 22 you can see the same glazed look over Kooning's eyes as he says he'll take care of stark as you see on Maya at the end of 23. It's not as blatant a use as when he turned Paragon's viewpoint around, but you can still tell. I guess having his hands on someone's head allows better use of the mind control or something... and makes the target's eyes turn red...

It's been a slow build-up, but WOW! Issue #23 has some serious pay-off. Will be anxiously waiting the next several issues to see where te Knauf's are going and how this is resolved.

As I stated in a post a week or so back, this arc really benefits from a reread of the issues.  Awesome arc so far.....

Oh of course he's always had mindbending powers, courtesy of that ol' left ring finger mental intensifier (perhaps also facilitated by his martial arts mastery of qi?), but I think I'm on the same page as most everyone else with finding the use of them here relatively subtle compared to most comic book hypnosis. I wonder if he's been taking lessons from Brother Justin Crowe?  Wink Speaking of Knauf's Carnivale (and if you think the plot is a while unfolding in I.M you should  git yourself over to that beautifully textured show!) Tony's looking as scruffy as Jack Hawkins by the end of #23...but then he has been wearing the armour for a while and I wonder if he's had time to have a wash?  Wink Daniel Knauf has always had an interest in Orientalism, by the way, especially in the martial arts area, witness his telemovie script "Cannan's Way" (based on Zatoichi) aka "Blind Justice" (Not the television series, by the way) so I reckon he's got a reasonable knowledge base to tackle the Mandy's character.

Incidentally, the word "Mandarin" is actually a 16th Century Portugese one, coined with a good deal of wobbly etymology and mistaken linguistics (a fun feature of Occidental-Oriental relations!) after they interacted with Imperial court officials. Apparently the small oranges are named for the colour of some Chinese court robes, though that later usage comes from the 19th century. By the way, although most everyone in the West calls the official Chinese language Mandarin it is of course, actually "Putonghua."

I still can't get over the spinal bling! Cool Now if Sauron had done something like that, or indeed simply incorporated the One Ring into the mail elements of his armour, instead of sticking the darned thing out there to be lopped off, he'd be Ruler of Middle Earth....

Now, where's Ultimo and a certain dragon.....?

... so now there's the notion to contend with that Graviton and Stark were both seeing dead people.
Who's influence might this be? What or who do these two have in common that might cause this?

Extremis... under the influence of Mandy via Maya.
