Merrick from AICN suggested Brad Bird as a possible replacement. I'd love to see Whedon return, but the Mission: Impossible 4/The Incredibles director is a great choice, too.

I don't know if it would or even could have the same flavor without Joss. From the time I read he was directing Avengers, I was at ease. I've been a fan of his since season 2 of buffy, & was even part of the Browncoats movment in my city. (I got to see Serenity a month early!) I think it would be a mistake of the part of both Marvel (disney), & Joss if he didn't return to helm the sequal. Unless of course, Heath is up to the job !

I don't care what color you are, where you come from, what god you worship, who you date, or what your DNA looks like under a scanner.

I was a Joss fan going back to Alien Resurrection (when he was writing it in 94/95 -- movie was ok, but his script was better -- director butchered it), and his work on improving the scripts of Speed and Toy Story. I wasn't a Buffy fan, but I really enjoyed Angel and Firefly/Serenity. So I know what you mean about feeling at ease, like it made sense. In 2000, Joss said he wanted to direct Iron Man, before New Line bought the rights, or right around that time.

If Joss doesn't come back, I think Brad Bird would make a worthy successor, indeed.
