A question about Rhodey

In one of the first issues where they introduced Rhodey (Apocalypse Then), they mention that Rhodey was in charge of Stark's aeronautics division as well as being Tony's pilot and friend.

Since then, we've never really seen Rhodey ever use his engineering skills. He's always been portrayed as the "military guy" who seeks to solve problems with military solutions rather than engineering solutions.

Was Rhodey's engineering ret-conned out of Iron Man? I think, of all the things they try with Rhodey, that would be the most interesting.

My new thought on Rhodey is that he sells off his Stark stock and starts his own airplane design business that competes with Stark Enterprises.

I really don't recall Rhodey having that particular position but it's possible it was just forgotten or done away with quickly. There were a few times Stark promoted him, if for no other reason to give Rhodey the leverage and power needed to get something done.

I don't think you can have Rhodey be an engineer given Stark is one of if not the best engineer in the Marvel U; he would just look second rate.I think that's why the two work well together: they're very contrasting and have different skill sets.
