Ben Kingsley is very cool.

Extremis virus is not cool.

Please don't have Extremis virus in Iron Man 3.

I'm wondering if he'll be a variation on The Mandarin?

Ugh. Why bother?

Iron Man 1 was true to the source material, bringing a fresh look to the table which worked well, with great characters incorporated into a solid story.
Iron Man 2 changed classic characters & abandoned their comic counterparts leading to a messy story & contrived plot between them.

The filmmakers should look at these two statements when making Iron Man 3, and it should become clear what to do for that movie.

It's already been reported that Kingsley will play a villain but will not be the Mandarin.

I believe they're going for a twist like Henri Ducard/Ra's al Ghul from Batman Begins.

The Mandarin is the villain, he just won't be of Chinese ancestry.

Remember when the guy who played Raza, Faran Tahir, said his character could easily be the Mandarin, I sorta bought it, but the whole "mysterious man behind the scenes" doesn't work well if he's allowing Stark to escape, Stane to zap him, etc. But here are the old scoops about it, including a 2009 one saying he could be Mandarin in IM 3:

http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/notyetamovie/news/?a=11978

If you search it out, you'll see a lot happened before Star Trek opened, which he had a part in, around spring 2009, then again in Nov. 2009, when Star Trek hit DVD/Blu-ray. I'm guessing it was due to interviews with him regarding Iron Man. They kept saying IM 3 because everything was locked in, script-wise, on IM 2 by the spring, and shooting commenced in June.

Perhaps it's revealed that in IM1, Stane was recruited to supply weapons/armor to the Mandarin.  But the Mandarin underestimated Tony Stark's resourcefulness.  Whereas in IM2, it's revealed the Mandarin used Vanko's thirst for revenge to see what Tony is capable of.

I was so excited when Iron Man 1 was released - not only because of the idea of seeing this character on film, but because the prospect of having a real trilogy unfold with a long time sub plot culminating in the Mandarin's appearance actually looked like it was going to happen. But then Iron Man 2, which should've been the traditional darker, act II of a trilogy, dashed that idea and didn't advance the story in any real way. Now Iron Man 3 is going to be helmed by a Director that doesn't seem to care much about what was being set up previously, and so it becomes pretty clear that the Iron Man films aren't going to go in the solid-storytelling direction that was alluded to in Iron Man 1 years ago now.

That said, I can't wait to find out more about the third movie, and I'm so happy we've seen the character on film in generally fun flicks. But the unfolding of Iron Man's story ala a great Star Wars setup or closer to the comics is generally a thing of the past at this point (mostly due to Iron Man 2).
