Gah. AvX:VS battle was okay. It was a cute read.

Spoilers:

They completely cop out on the iron man fight. Rather than actually winning, he wins by default. It's like they couldn't actually have him win outright so they limped their way into him winning.

Bonus points for having iron man use new gadgets on the fly, but they brought up the EMP which he's immune to. Derp. But they made magneto - the master of magnetism - a beast. Am I wrong or is he a fleshy, pulpy elderly-ish man with magnet powers? I mean trading shots from IM?

Anyhow, the win was cheap in my opinion.

Having not read it, I cannot comment on specifics, but I've pointed out several times that Iron Man should easily beat any X-Man (et al) that relies on mental manipulation (whether it's controlling the weather, fire, minds, or magnetism). Regardless of how you figure it out, it still takes energy to take control (brain waves). It should be a relatively simple matter for Tony to scan for such brain waves and emit a counter to them.

To make the fight more dramatic, you could have Tony take time to find the proper frequency and counter-frequency, but that should be the end of the fight.

That would actually be a cool fight. Magneto pounting the crap out of Iron Man, then about to render the coup de grace, and suddenly his powers turn off.

That is better and more thought out than what happened in the comic.

Even the Namor vs Thing fight, they coped out a bit.  Rather than letting one hero win straight up, they had a bit of an intruder into the fight.

Marvel ought to have stuck to their guns and had one character soundly beating the other.  Period.

Totally agree. In fact iirc, the Silver Centurion Armor boasted disruptor weapons that Tony speculated could be used as a form of non-lethal force on normal people, and I think the Heroes-Return Armor boasted the same but it's been awhile and I don't have time to go back and look it up (isn't that the latest non-OHM related way to write for Marvel?).

So technically every battle is a politically correct ending that can't really send one fanbase off their rocker? I decided to hold off on getting this, thinking I could pick it up as a TPB. Has it been entertaining at least?

Exactly.  There isn't a straight win at all and it's all about circumstance so that the losing fan base can say "well, if the phoenix force didn't disrupt magneto, he'd have beaten iron man".

Entertaining?  No.  It has truly been the worst Marvel event I've read. Continuity has been terrible and unlike Civil War, they are now painting both sides as blazing jack-holes.

I found it entertaining.  Let's face it, while we wanted Tony to win outright, most of us thought he was going to get owned from the first punch.  That didn't happen here.  Tony was using his brain, using new gadgets, and coming up with strategies on the fly to stay toe-to-toe with Magneto.  Hell, we had the upper hand until the every end when Magneto got his second wind.  Yes, the Phoenix force disrupted Mags, but who says he would have won the fight even if he didn't.  Remember, the narration was switching back and forth between the two and just happened to be on Magneto's side when he said he was winning.  Nothing in the panels suggested he was.  Tony was still "all systems go" when the brawl ended and looking for another opponent.  Tony won.  I thought it was clear enough.

As for both sides acting like jack-holes, I only see one side: Cyclops.  The problem with comparing this to Civil War is that it's perfectly in character this time.  Cyclops has been acting like this for the last 5 or so years.  Since Hope was born during "Messiah Complex," Cyclops has transformed from weak and whiny leader to hard ass general.  That's kinda the reason half the X-Men took off.  They think he's wrong and getting crazier by the day.  Cap is being too harsh though.  I would have preferred it if he tried to talk to Scott without the Avengers present.  That hardline, I thought, was out of character.

I also noticed that Tony wore a suit of armor, not extruding one from his pores or however he suits up in his own title.  There really is an "Avengers IM" and an "Invicible IM".

No offense, but I have a hard time believing it's the worst Marvel event. Civil War was biased political commentary with characters purposefully written out of character to get a writer's (and probably editor's) political views across.

World War Hulk was nothing but Marvel being fanboys and getting a hard on for Hulk beating up everyone.

Granted, I've not read Avengers vs X-Men, but I do find it hard to believe it's worse. At the very least, things seem somewhat on an even keel here, and that's something you can't say about the above mentioned two.

But i guess it's give and take in a way. Do you want to see your character owned like IM has been the past 5+ years, or lame stalemates? sadly, the stalemates see a vast improvement...

I loved AvX.  It was sad to see my co-favorite artist JRJ seem so rushed, and I didn't like the narration, but come on!  The dialogue, the fights, and Iron Man rocked solid!

I didn't read the close-up fight you were referring to between IM and Mags, but we all have to love that line: "If you think this fight is a no-brainer, you don't know Iron Man"!  And my favorite moment of the battle: Iron Man OWNING Emma Frost.  Someone shoulda' done this long before now, but I'm glad it was Iron Man.  (Sheesh, she on her own could justify SHRA.)  Bendis writes him as the Batman of the MU as he should be.

I think one thing to keep in mind is that this is the second issue of AvX.  There are going to be remaches--this is just the opening shot, so they want to keep the fights from being to conclusive right away.  At least, that's my theory.

Believe it.  From a purely Iron Man perspective, this is a better event than Civil War.  But overall, it's been awful.

Everything is poorly concocted from the storyline to the writing.  The art is rushed.  It's just not ... good.

I mean, if mindless action without any real character portrayal is your thing - you'll like this.  But if you want any real reasoning or coherence - this is not it.  While "CoolExec" digs it, most people have not.  I'm going to keep chugging along with it in hopes of an epic payoff, but so far I am terribly disappointed.

That's JRJR's work isn't it? If so, they need to stop letting him him design specialty armors; this is the second one in a row he's butchered. Lame, lazy and stupid designs...
