Betting that "new" Iron Man is Tony or dum dum dum His desentant come to save his Great Great Grandpa because the tech looks to be from the future.
Also to note off topic the solict for Spider-Men seems to be either Time-Travel story or finally a x-over with the Ultimate u and Marvel u

I haven't read much IM since '89 (no joke) I picked up Extremis, & "filled" myself in from various wikis & the marvel "database". I was thinking of going back & starting to hunt down the missing stuff, but this, this makes me sad. It's so not what I'd been expecting IM's long run to come to. I know Tony was on the "wrong" side during Civil War, but someone had to be the "big bad". & it seems like no one has forgotten (or forgiven) what happened because of all that. So what if he was on registration's side, so what if he was head of shield, so what if he cloned Thor . . . errr maybe skip that last one . . . All in all he was doing what he thought was the right thing. & He wasn't ALL wrong, eevryone needs to be held accountable for their actions, & "heros" ought to be no exception. & what of the first "Armor Wars"? Again he did what he thought was right even though he came into direct conflict with others he admired & respected. While I disliked almost everything he did blindly, I still admire him for wanting what is, best. I don't think he deserves what has become of the title..

It's not a surprise really, since Fraction pulled exactly the same stunt with Thor. I hope it's for real this time. After all the stupidity they put the character through, Tony needs a rest. Let him rest for a while until Marvel find someone who knows what to do with him. But frankly, after the Hulk was hit in the face with radioactive monkey crap, I won't be holding my breath until it happens.

Ya know, that makes more since than anything else. Im sure this all ties into IIM #500....Iron Man (Tony) from the future comes back to make sure that future doesn't happen, because Tony giving up being Iron Man lets the Mandarin win. They fake Tony's death to put Mandy & Stane into a false sense of security, and when thier guard is down, Tony comes back and saves the day. Wow....nice to know im as good a writer as Fraction lol

Does anyone really care about this anymore?
Seriously, it's clear that Fraction does not like Tony Stark as a character and has does everything he can to get to this point where he can remove the character with minimal fuss. He's degraded Tony Stark's importance in the Marvel Universe. He's destroyed Stark Enterprises. He's taken out the only other armored hero of significance (Rhodes). At this point, you almost have to wonder why there's a character named Tony Stark at all. He doesn't do anything or impact anyone.
I'm only mildly surprised because the Avengers is coming out in two months which features Iron Man significantly and next year, Iron Man 3 should be coming out. With the movies showing Tony Stark as Iron Man while the comics do not will drive away some new readers.
Otherwise, this is completely predictable within the Matt Fraction world. Bluntly, I was mildly surprised they brought him back after the first "death." My only guess is that, at the time, Iron Man was too significant of a hero to just remove at the time. Now, after a couple years of demeaning the character, they can remove him with a whimper.

Darn you Fraction you blew it all up.

The only way this could be any worse is if Fraction wins another Eisner for this huge steaming pile of crap. If he does you can forget anyone after him retconning his changes out.

I guess it makes sense: Tony Stark's body is destroyed/mortally wounded, so he uploads it into a mechanical Iron Man suite.
It's not like that hasn't been done before...

Personally, I think the prior Eisner was a set up. Marvel bribed someone. Fraction won an Eisner for "Best New Series" for the Invincible Iron Man. Last time I checked, the Invincible Iron Man has run, uninterrupted, since 1968. But Marvel got around this by renumbering the series when Fraction took over. However, since then, Marvel went back to the old numbering system. So, how did it win the Best New Series? Also, I think it was a "make up" for Marvel screwing the pooch on Iron Man: Haunted, which was one of the better written series in a long time. It got no play on the Marvel website, but was considered one of the better stories that year.

The titling and numbering on the Iron Man books is a bit confusing. Despite having the word "Invincible" on the cover for many a year, the title was always legally called simply "Iron Man", until volume 4, issue #17 (during the Knauf run), when the indicia suddenly said "Invincible Iron Man" while the cover said "Iron Man: Director of SHIELD". The title officially became "Iron Man: Director of SHIELD" with issue #29, while Fraction's "Invincible Iron Man" started up with a new #1 issue that same month. So, you're argument has some merit, though I believe their logic of "best new series" comes from the fact that IM: DOS and IIM were running concurrently for a few issues. They were two separate titles, so IIM could be considered a "new series".

According to wikipedia, there was actually a 2-3 month gap between the two volumes. But either way, it was idiotic.
Hell, 5NM wasn't even that good. It was okay, but there were better stories out there.

I like your idea really, but I also think old future Tony bit the dust so.. :/. Also I kind of remember Director of Shield and IIM runing side by side if only for 2-4months, but even them it was probably that Secret Invasion War machine storyarc. Dc and especially Marvel really have an issue with trying to put out new #1s whenever they can. Its become very annoying to me personally...

INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #518 & 519 MATT FRACTION (w) • SALVADOR LARROCA (A&C) •The New Iron Man explodes into action! • Spymaster’s rampage within Stark Resilient comes to its bloody end! • THE ASSASSINATION OF TONY STARK! 32 PGS. Guess the silver lining is that Fraction cant ruin him more if he's dead....No wait...Scratch that...im sure he'll find a way And not to point out the obvious, but Tony can't be assassinated or the whole story of issue 500 becomes moot... Oh wait, we are talking about the same writer who had Spymaster killed during Fear Itself and yet he is also currently still loitering around Stark Resilient in the current storyarc.
