The Science Channel has a series called "Prophets of Science Fiction" where they cover the life & career of the greats Heinlein, Verne, Welles, Asimov, Clarke, & Lucas (Wow, pretty august company they threw him in with!). 1 Of the regular commentators they have on this series is none other than Matt Fraction himself. Here is what I don't understand, how can someone who has a love for the classics be on a step-by-step quest to destroy a quintessentially sci-fi character like Iron Man?

That is shocking. Especially since the man has proven utterly incapable of including any kind of advanced tech into the armor.

Ugh I remember seeing him more then once on that show and whenever he popped up I shake my fist at him just for being on it. I will never understand why they asked a guy who clearly failed high school physics to be on a show called Prophets of Science Fiction.

His commentary is about as empty as you'd expect: "Jules Verne is pretty cool!"  type stuff.

But yeah, I was sitting there watching one of the episodes and was like

Physicists
Astronomers
Engineers
...
Freaking Matt Fraction?

In fairness, what he's doing by making sci-fi a stand-in for something mundane isn't that different from what more beloved sci-fi writers do all the time. Star Trek and Dr. Who both do this constantly.

However, Fraction seems to have gotten it into his head that Stark is supposed to be on the business end of the metaphor, instead of being the hero reacting to the metaphor.

Instead of landing the Enterprise/Tardis on the sci-fi-stand-in-for-alcoholism planet, Stark himself is the alcoholic(even when he's not using literal alcohol) and it's the secondary cast-members who react to this. But because we don't really spend enough time with these secondary people to like them, they just come across as bitchy scolds. They show up for two seconds, preach at Stark, and then vanish. And then it's back to drearily and redundantly watch Stark engage in his alcoholism-analogue behaviors.

Can you imagine watching Star Trek, and almost the entire show is a Cardassian torturing people, and then the Star Trek guys show up for one minute to bitch at him that torture is wrong and then vanish? And then the next show and the next show were equivalents to that? That's what Fraction is doing.
