I'm already getting an "arrogant Lone Ranger and unappreciated Tonto" vibe from this picture.  Which is likely what the movie is all about.

I like Lone Ranger--I really do.  But I'm nervous about these possible missteps:

#1. Lone Ranger decides upholding the law = bad, and unilaterally deciding on and carrying out justice = good.

#2. American Indian = wise, abused, misunderstood and unappreciated.  White man = arrogant, dismissive, naive and stupid.  American Indian culture = good; Western American culture = bad.  (Cue slams on Christianity, capitalism and industry--oh looky at misstep number three...)

#3. Transcontinental Railroad = bad (all while the industry making the film is based out of california--go figure).

I also have to say, as a guy who really likes the American Indians, couldn't they have gotten, I don't know an American Indian to play Tonto?  There are really good actors of that ethnicity out there who have a real hard time getting jobs.  I watched "Smoke Signals" and it was really good.  What about the guy who played Victor?  He'd be great as Tonto, and that would make the American Indians like the movie a lot more.

I think Depp is a tiny bit Cherokee, probably as much as I am Native American (I think I'm 1/16), though I believe my Grandma was born on a reservation.
