Thought now that Fear Itself was finished there might be some who would want to discuss it. This is the place.

Was wondering if anyone caught the apparent assassination of Spymaster in Epilogue 3 of issue 7? I guess now we know why he hasn't been revealed in the pages of Iron Man...

I thought I'd also see if anyone was reading or planning to read Fear Itself: The Fearless or Fear Itself: Battle Scars? I decided to follow The Fearless and may give Battle Scars a try too.

I just finished it myself. LOVED the ending with Cap (You know of what I speak!), Yeah I caught that, wondered if I was seeing it right, so that's Spymaster after all. & the whole Bucky thing . . . I hear Steve's taking up the mantle again in the new volume.

I'll do what I normally do and wait for issue #12 to see what's actually going to happen. Cheesy

I must have missed the Spymaster assassination when I flipped through the issue in the store. But yeah, it's there! Rather disappointing, hope it was a decoy, it'd be rather lame if the whole Spymaster plot was done away with IN another book. I'm inclined to think so given the Invincible Iron Man solicitation for January 2012!

Cap's shield is scarred, but stronger than ever... now with URU.

No...seriously.

Don't worry.  That scar will be removed and forgotten in time for Captain America 2.   Cheesy

That's kind of lame. They took something great in the Marvel U that was man made and infused it with something mystical, then gave it a crack like the liberty bell to try and make it more profound.

This has all happened before, & it will all happen again . . .

Battlestar quotes aside, I found this on Cap's shield

So Thor's dead again? Hmm, wonder how long this will last with the movie popularity...

You can't even appreciate the drama due to the obviousness of his eventual return, plus what seems like an unoriginal sacrifice.

SPOILERS for Fear Itself 7.1

So it looks like nobody actually died during Fear Itself.  We know that while Thor's mortal form may have expired, the adventures of the Thunder God will continue in his own mag.  As for Bucky...

Well, Bucky's alive too.

I commend Marvel for keeping this revelation under wraps until the book hit the stands.  I really would have expected them to be pimping this issue like no other.  So it turns out that Bucky was still barely alive after his seemingly mortal encounter with Sin.  After Black Widow and Fury got him to the doctors, Fury had the Infinity Formula (which has kept Fury alive for many years) administered to Bucky.  Bucky pulled through and now only Widow, Fury and Steve Rogers know Bucky is still alive.  Since he is being hunted by the Russians as well as some in the American Government as well as other secret enemies, Bucky is going to stick to the shadows and operate as a spy once again.  You'll be able to follow his adventures in his new monthly ongoing: Winter Soldier by Brubaker and Guice.

Again, this was really unexpected and a great issue.  Brubaker knows these characters perfectly and it shows here.  Highly recommended.

Honestly, I did not understand the point of Fear Itself.

The previews indicated that the Heroes would be facing their fears. But instead, they just faced a bunch of bad guys with hammers and super-powers. While this is not good, why is this so fearsome to the Avengers? They have faced such destruction before (Operation Galactic Storm, World War Hulk, Secret Invasion, Inferno, Infinity Crusade, Onslaught, House of M, to name a few). Why is this so bad compared to anything they've faced before?

Like many of Fraction's stories, it has a lot of potential but goes no where.

The resolution kinda went no where, also. I guess, based on the story, the Avengers just needed to hold off the bad guys with the Hammer until Thor killed the Serpent?

Other than an opportunity to kill off Thor and Bucky (kinda) and get Asgard out of Oklahoma, what happened? What did we learn? While I hate moralizing in stories, there has to be a point to the story. Other than the total destruction of NYC (for the 3rd time in 3 years), what happened? Even the other stuff got "fixed" by Odin.

I'm tired of these constant events. It seems that every year, we have to suffer through an event that disrupts the regular storylines and really doesn't go anywhere (though, with the current Iron Man storyline, I'm not sure it's a bad thing).

We already have the 2012 event. I'm guessing it involves Phoenix.

Yeah, it was definitely misleading and from what I've read really didn't go anywhere or do anything. The only connection to fear was the God of Fear was behind it.

Definitely. The man has good ideas but can't execute worth a damn. I actually liked the whole concept of the hammers but that was about it.

No, there really seemed to be no point and it wasn't really anything we haven't seen before. It seems the point of every event is meant to reboot the Marvel U in some way, but after Fear Itself there is no actual set up for that reboot. Civil War, SI and Siege at least changed how the Marvel U operated, you can't say that about the latest one. Everything seems back to status quo like it was before it started.

It's a pure money grab. My LCS owner says the past few major events have been selling less and less, and while a single shop isn't a total indication, it seems in general readers are getting tired of the major events. It's no surprise really, it happens with everything. I wouldn't mind if, like you said, it didn't interrupt any of the arcs of the main books. SI and Siege I actually enjoyed, WWH and Civil War were terrible.

And until the major events stop making money they won't stop. Who knows what it will be but I doubt it will be good.
