I go back to what IMJ said (I believe it was him) when Iron Man came out, and made the point that if people saw the movie and went to look at the comics, coming out of Civil War, they'd see basically a super nasty Tony. Marvel needs to write for their audience, not their own personal and political, etc., motives.

If Marvel really wants to appeal to movie goers then they should arrange to place spinner racks into movie theaters to sell comics at the concession or ticket stands.

Since it looks like DC has taken Barbra Gordon out of the wheelchair and back as Batgirl, DC may have just lost me as a reader.  I may still pickup Green Lantern in the beginning just to see what's different, but I have lost a ton of faith in DC.  The current Batgirl book was doing well sales-wise, the 2 trades both made the NYC bestsellers list (Volume 2 just hit #2 on the list), and it has a lot of acclaim from readers and critics.  Why screw it up?

Also, Detective Comics also has been relaunched, so it will not hit issue #1000 like many hoped.

I hear that on Barbara Gordon. They're going back to pre-Killing Joke...

Why stop reading?

If it's a good story, it's a good story.

Why stop reading?

If it's a good story, it's a good story.

When it comes to Batgirl, it's a new creative team and a new Batgirl.  I personally have no interest in Babs as Batgirl.  I was reading the book because I liked the character of Stephanie Brown and her supporting cast.  How she dealt with being a college student and a crimefighter, and her rise as a hero is what hooked me in the first place.  I also loved the big sister\little brother relationship she had with current Robin Damien Wayne.  All of that has been erased from the DCU it seems, so I have no reason to continue on.

If IM were rebooted now with a new creative team, Howard Stark as IM, and Tony and all his exploits erased from continuity, wouldn't you feel disappointed too?

At first, maybe.  But over the long haul ... Not really.  As long as the stories were good.

The stories I liked are still there.  They still evoke a positive reaction from me.  It's not like they erased the fun I had reading them.

Tony Stark isn't even Tony Stark anymore.  It happens.  When there is that much creative turnover --- things are bound to get messed up.

Personally, I find comics too narrow at times.  For instance, Pepper getting a suit of armor.  Really?  Or the "female" versions of popular superheroes like Spider-girl or Superwoman or batgirl.  It just seems creatively bankrupt.

What I'm saying though is that I'm reading Batgirl, not because I like the character of Batgirl no matter who is wearing the suit, but because I like the character of Stephanie Brown who just happens to be the current Batgirl.  I liked her character when she was a supporting character in the Tim Drake Robin series back in the 90's as the The Spoiler, and I liked her when she took over as Robin for a short stint.  I am reading Batgirl now because she is Batgirl.  Even if they were not doing this reboot, and she was killed off anyway and a new Batgirl took over, I would stop because my reason for reading the book was gone.  I could care less about Batgirl.  What hooked me and has kept me reading was who was under the cowl.  Not the cowl itself.

I am saddened by this change in Batgirl because the current book is excellent, and it's being killed off in it's prime to make way for a reboot that looks to erase years of character development for both Barbara Gordon and Stephanie Brown.  That to me is creatively bankrupt.  I know the old stories will be there, and I will continue to read them again and again.  I am just sad that there won't be more.

-I just typed this whole thing and then read it and went -meh- what's the point?-
In any event Ty, you like what you like. It always cracks me up that comic book guys argue the merits of the "story". It's the easy argument, when in fact what we like as fans is much more complex than that.  You could tell me a great Howard the Duck story and quite frankly, I'm not going to care. It's Howard the Duck.

I love Bendis. I dropped his New Avengers book although the characters were well written. You know why? Because the New Avengers cast sucks and is full of B-Listers that have nothing to do with "Earht's Mightiest".  Luke Cage. Whuppee.

Interesting points all around. Sometimes it's the cast, sometimes it's the character, regardless of quality. When Waid promised to bring back Batroc, even tongue-in-cheek, before he went back to Captain America in late 97/early 98 (Heroes Return), I was like, "Meh."

I agree.  The relaunched Batgirl may full well be a great success.  Gail Simone is considered one of the best comic writers around, but I don't care about Batgirl.  Story isn't a factor in my decision to drop the book.  It's about character, and the character I liked to follow is no longer in the book, so I'm not going to read it anymore.  Now if they announced a book starring Stephanie Brown, regardless if she is Batgirl or not, then I would read that.  But they so far have not.

And IMJ, you are not missing anything by not reading New Avengers.  It is the weakest of the 4 Avenger titles.

Right that is, my friend.  Avengers, New Avengers, Secret Avengers, and Avengers Academy.
