He'd have to be an Iron Man to survive Heart Surgery in the 30's.  Ah well, this is comics after all.

I think people seem to be missing my point. No powers means no armor. At best, he has a flak jacket or something similar. The "Iron Man" would just be a nickname, probably given to him some sensationalist newspaper or something.

I agree, that's the way to do it. Better Tony should be confined to a wheelchair or something than have to stumble about in steel armour and vaccum tubes. What would he use it for anyway? Would he really need repulsor beams to deal with Lucky Luciano? I like the idea of the nickname though, paper-boys out on the street corner in the late 30's would be telling people to read all about "Iron Man" Stark saying "No" to nazis.

Agent,

I respect your views, but let our very talented group here show what they are made of  Ok.

As to second go round for the titles, you're right we should let Marvel come out with Noir books, and see what transpires.

As interesting and idea as a Deco or slightly later noir reboot would be I'd also like to see what a story with a young Howard Stark and HIS father set back in the pulp era might bring....

I don't worship the 20s/30s as a golden age in fiction but I am very fond of a lot of work that came out then nevertheless....really fine time to be reading and going to the flicks!

After seeing this topic I decided to post my own version of Iron Man in pulp film style.

description: After being gunned down by 1930's gangsters, tycoon Anthony Stark devolops a vacum tube powered armor to keep his heart beating and vows to stop the monsterous murders from harming other human beings ever again.

As promised (and requested; thanks JD. Hope you don't mind, "borrowed" the fedora and overcoat Cheesy), IJ's pulp Iron Man:

Some design explanations:

Trying to maintain the "pulp" feel of the era, I tried to evoke deep-sea diving equipment with some of the design elements, as well as keeping some of the more familiar elements from the original clunker armor.

The cuirass is three, over-lapping segments with the top section having the uni-beam lamp on the front and the pump for the pneumatic locomotion system mounted to it. The middle section has the simple batteries. The lower section is pure plate armor.

This era's Tony has created an innovative gear, pulley and cable locomotion apparatus, running on a battery-powered, pnmeumatic system that allows him to walk.

The wrist "repulsors" are also pneumatic-powered, and fire non-lethal rounds; everything from "bean-bag" shot to knock-out gas pellets.

The "under-sheath" is a primitive precursor to nylon ballistic cloth.

And darn it, if he moves to fast, the overcoat is shredded. Hence he buys them by the gross. Wink

You realize the 30's is the era of Telsa and Edison, death rays and other fantastic ideas.  John Campbell and Hugo Gernsback.  This is when A.E. van Vogh and Issac Asimov got their starts.  I mean, if you did Iron Man Noir, it's not really a la The Shadow or his compatriots, but Gernsback.

Lovely Place to write a story. Cheesy

As promised (and requested; thanks JD. Hope you don't mind, "borrowed" the fedora and overcoat Cheesy), IJ's pulp Iron Man:

I don't know if I buy into the fedora, it seems pretty redundant when he's already encased his head in a helmet. But it also looks like he's not completely covered in armour and I quite like that. The pneumatic repulsor is also great, it goes a long way to making the design bulkier and really helps invoke the NEDU suits from around that period.

On a purely stylistic level, the overcoat getting shredded looks great and it's a pretty good concept. It would go a long way to making the art more dynamic without having to add the classic colour scheme. Very nice indeed.

IJ,

You are fantastic could you color it in the colors we know for IM or simply the Colors for WM muted somehow to covey a 3d look I love your concept of pneumatic repulsor wrist weapon tho.it makes perfect sense, and to take a premise from Rob Jan re:As interesting and idea as a Deco or slightly later noir reboot would be I'd also like to see what a story with a young Howard Stark and HIS father set back in the pulp era might bring.... Even though Tony could not exist in the 30"s so using Howard Stark instead might fit the same era,and who knows maybe influenced his son thirty years later,by finding out his father's past life as an original "Iron Man" aka the shadow.

Try that suggestion with my complements.
