I'm such a freaking techno dork.  I'm like 6'6" and look every part of an NFL player ... and I'm a nerdy, comic book, techno-geek.  How pathetic is that?

Anyhow, I'm having a geek-gasm because I'm getting my iPhone tomorrow.

Think it'll live up to the hype?

Not totally, but it will still be cool. Most reviewers think it's first gen iteration lacks a few key features (i.e. card slot, GSM capacity, etc.), but overall it will be the must have multi-function.

Most of the features I couldn't care thing one about.  I like being able to hop in the Prius with a phone instead of a phone and an ipod.

What I like most is that most of the features are software activated.  Changes and updates and new utilities can be upped to my phone.

Not just that, but Apple has been known to put a feature into their hardware only to activate it later.

I'm not sure it'll be the cat's behind, but it sure should be fun!  Heh.

I'd love to get one, but dropping $500 on a first-generation product like this is risky. Sure, it's lacking some key features (no Flash seems to be the biggest one to me), but it really has less to do with that than just waiting for Apple to work out the kinds (and there will be some kinks).

Still, there are two major reasons I won't be getting one anytime soon, other than the price (and let's face it, if you want something bad enough, price really isn't too much of an issue, at least in this range):

1) Locked into AT&T Wireless (formerly Cingular). I use a smaller carrier (SunCom, available more or less just in the SE) and have myself locked into an older plan...unlimited minutes, 24/7, 300 roaming minutes per month included, for $49. Add to that unlimited text messaging and $2 for unlimited data, and well, I don't want to have to change my carrier just to get a new phone, especially not the provider formerly known as Cingular (had some major issues before going to the unplan on SunCom). When an unlocked version of the iPhone becomes available, then I can more seriously consider it as an option.

2) Storage capacity. Sure. 4GB is an ok amount of space, and for another $100, you can get yourself up to 8GB, but compare that to the larger capacity iPods (30 & 60GB) and it pales in comparision. There will be plenty of storage for songs, but for those using the iPod as more of a multimedia system to watch videos downloaded off of the iTunes store (or who just like carrying around all of their music, like I do), well, 8GB (with no expansion path) starts looking kind of small.

The thing that kind of leaves me scratching my head is that the people who buy iPods have been clamoring for a widescreen iPod from right around the time Apple announced that they would be releasing a video iPod. When Apple finally gets around to doing that, it ends up being an overpriced (possibly...have yet to see the component cost breakdown) iPod/phone hybrid with insufficient storage to really do the iPod functionality justice, at least for those buying the MOST through Apple's iTunes. It boggles the mind...

Don't get me wrong, I like Apple, I like the iPod, I still use my eMac. One of these days, I hope to like and use some iteration of the iPhone. That day just isn't today.

Actually there's been some leaks/rumors stating that there will be a widescreen ipod released by Fall.

Yeah, the widescreen iPod I'd expect to see around Leopard release.

As for the iPhone - it's amazing and beautiful to behold, but the parts that are frustrating are maddeningly so!

Overall, for 1st gen, it's pretty freaking amazing.

The part that makes me comfortable about buying this phone is that Apple is going to be able to update it through iTunes.  So, if they have a new feature or whatnot then they can quickly update me.

As for the space on the phone - it's not really an iPod replacement to me.  It's convenience.  It's not like I fit my music collection on my 60G iPod anyhow - I've got well over 400Gigs.  So, I'm pretty selective to begin with.  With the iPhone, it's more the "what do I want to listen to RIGHT NOW" kind of thing.  I'll pop some of my favorites on there and then some spur of the moment stuff.

It's enough of an iPod to be usable and it's great for plugging into my Prius for quick trips around town.

Heh, considering how many issues I've had with iTunes (from both a Mac and PC), that's not very reassuring. Of course, it was nothing that reflashing the unit didn't fix, but it was a nuisance to be sure.

Don't get me wrong, it's a nice piece of tech (even moreso now that some of the more detailed specs are becoming known), but I'm going to take more of a spectator's stance for now.

Hello all, I just joined the site and this looked liked as good a place as any to introduce myself.  My username is 'ebotnamnori" I've been reading IM since the age of thirteen, I'm a bit older now Wink, ironically though I'm a bigger fan now!  I was really impressed by some of the post I read, which led to my coming onboard.  I am a self employed; part-time student.  I hope I can bring something worthwhile to the forum.  As far as the iPhone, I also like new tech, however the iphone did not grab me; It seemes they were trying to do too much?  I'm not sure if you get where I'm coming from but in all fairness I have never been much of a fan of anything that apple has out besides the MAC.  As far as my phone choice, after much shopping around I chose the HELIO OCEAN! I love this phone you can check out their site for the specs.  Once again HELLO!

Welcome to the forums and feel free to join in on all the ongoing conversations.

For the record, I think we should all revert to rotary phones.
