Yes, I am. I think what he's done with Iron Man with the whole extremis BS is utterly stupid as it completely destroyed the character. I think the "realism" he has injected into Marvel is utter crap. If I want realism, I'll pick up a newspaper or read a political journal. When I buy a comic, I'm looking for creativity and fantasy. I want to see one super powered peson duke it out with another in some different dimension. I dont give a rat's ass what comic character's political standpoint is, but apparently Joe Q thinks that is what people want to read. He has tied the Marvel universe right into real world events. What happens in the world happens in Marvel. It's ridiculous. I dont mind if they're mentioned, but Joe Q has made real world events the maind riving force of Marvel.

Shield has turned into nothing more than a UN peacekeeping force.
Iron Man isnt Iron Man anymore.
Civil War was completely mishandled.
World War Hulk is going to amount to nothing but Hulk beating up everyone else.
He has completely played up characters like Black Panther, who now can amazingly beat the Silver Surfer. Seriously, one of the dumbest things I have ever heard. I'm sure if he did a Marvel/DC crossover, Jubilee would beat Superman.
Whatever next year's big event is, I'm sure he'll screw that up to.

So yes, I dislike Joe Q because I think he is smothering creativity. Comics are about fantasy, he has made them about politics. He should have stuck with drawing the books, not writing them. Frankly I think the best thing Marvel can do is fire him and retcon everything he did as it is the only way to fix everything he's done. And I absolutely hate retconning, so you can imagine how bad I think he has messed up.

Gotta say I agree with you. Comics aren't the escapist fare they used to be. What's really funny is that it seems that the cart is now pushing the horse: Comic books inspired movies that have become wildly successful, but to work on the big screen as live action they had to be more "real." Due to that success it seems that more reality was then injected into the comics themselves.

However in the comics I don't think it works as well when you're in a universe of superheroes wearing spandex tights and capes. In a fantasy comic book world it works, but make it too real and you start asking "Why the heck is that dude wearing a cape?" And "Why is she wearing an outfit that totally shows what she looks like naked and crawls up her butt?"

Of course this really began WAY back with X-Men in the 80's, but in the past 5 years or so it's spread across many Marvel titles.

I don't read DC, are they doing the same thing in their "world"?

Vic

P.S. That's why I'm enjoying Mighty Avengers, BTW - old school style.

I personally love the more realistic take in the Marvel Universe.  I think it's a bit refreshing and probably one of the reasons I've picked comics back up.

Personally, I like character pieces.  I could care less about the "fights".  People complain when there isn't a massive battle in every comic, but to me - as long as there is development of a storyline, I'm happy.

So, in that respect, I'm happy.  It's also helping breathe new life into comics right now and is increasing sales (from what I've read).  So, I'm doubly okay with it.

I know  a lot of people dont like  tonys  choices  during the civil war  storyline  but i think it started going astray long ago

Tonys heart should never have  healed
its what made Tony such a great hero  the fact that he fought the good fight even though he could die at any moment
he had a  constant sense of his mortality
Now?
in every way, financially and biologically he is godlike now

I hope his extremis powers go away and his heart problems come back real soon

I disagree with the heart. Eventually his character was down so pat that the heart condition became more of a hindrince during stories than anything. It eventually got old when nearly every had "oh no! my heart!" We were fine for years without the heart issue, and when it was brought back after the sentient armor battle, it was just an annoying subplot once more in most stories.

The effect of the heart condition had left it's mark on Tony, and amde him who he was. It doesnt need to be brought back to restore him. It is better left gone in my opinion.

Don't forget teenage Tony had NO heart!  I actually agree with Chaos, because I feel this is why I haven't enjoyed comics.  Comics always had action, or something great, from page 1.

Oh, so you're one of those people.   Grin

Personally, in most cases what seems to be increasing sales is event after event after event with no let up.    I'm not saying there aren't good comics out there, because my monthly load of 40-50 comics says otherwise.  But, in my opinion, comics aren't what they used to be.  Whether that's necessary to keep the form alive or not is subject to opinion, but I'd give my eye teeth to read the kind of comics that got me hooked as a kid.  And I wonder just how many new readers today's comics bring in, as they're not really new-reader-friendly or readily-accessible to the younger crowds that are necessary for the continued existence of comics.

There are kids on the forum (Kaiser as an example), but if you are asking about younger kids, that might be a different story.  Maybe the younger kids who read comics are also out doing other things late at night (like sleeping) or during the day (like out doing younger kid stuff) while older guys like us are on the forums.

Most kids even 16 or younger have no jobs and likely have friends that they are out with.  I'm just saying that a lack of younger people on the forum here does not indicate that they are not reading comics.
