I picked up Beneath The Armor, it's kind of what got me started (after the movie, of course) with IM. I thought it was a very good book with tons of information as well as a very thorough history of Tony/IM. The only problem I had with it was it was so much information to digest at one time without actually getting into the comics. Personally, for my own benefit, I think it would've been good if I would've had some of the comics, possibly even the Omnibus, next to me as I read the book so I could take a few minutes and read some of the comics that Mr. Mangels often referred to. That way it would've allowed me to get a better feel for the writers and illustrators as they were being covered.
But, like I said, that would've been beneficial for me. On it's own, the book is a very comprehensive tome that I've gone back to more than a few times to get my bearings within the IM world.

Hey guys, this is my first post here haha. Bought extremis, war machine and haunted paperbacks recently and I have to say, I really like extremis and haunted. I'm not a fan of old school artwork so war machine didn't really stand out. Liked adi granov's art too, very realistic and cool.

I agree with the DVD. For the price you get every Iron Man issue EVER up to Execute Program, except for one glaring oversight with the Iron Man/Submariner one shot (that goes between the last ToS and IM #1) that they forgot to include but that's no big deal really. I have a pretty big back issue collection but I ended up buying it just to fill the blanks.
Iron Age is also a great read if you want to see some early Iron Man history and you can't really stomach the Tales of Suspense stuff.

ya, i highly recommend the "Beneath The Armor" book and "the Iron Age." my fellow fans mentioned above. As well as what TheIronJedi recommend in his 1st post here. (great choices). The 3 Essential books are must haves if like me you cant find the Omminbus or the Marvel Masterworks series. The only other one i think is good that wasn't metioned was "Doomquest"- which collects #149&150 and 249&250, the time travels with Doctor Doom. .. and of course Legacy Of Doom to go with it!!!

Please buy at your local comic shop. They really need your support! I live in the Ghent section of Norfolk, Virginia and a great guy just opened up Local Heroes Comics on Colonial avenue! It's a great shop. Check it out if you are in the area.

I started out with Extremis and The Invincible Iron Man trades with Fraction/Larroca, then bought all of the issues that would take us up to date on ebay. Another good suggestion, in my opinion, would be watching the second disc of the Iron Man movie, there is a great segment showing the history of the comic, and that has tons of info that helps fill ya in.

Year one first and foremost, great story and art, and will really establish the world and character. But a lot of people are going to be coming of the movie and expecting the same. For them I think in the newer stuff the 5 nightmares arc is good along with civil war. Older stuff like armore wars and daemon in a bottle will show the insperations behind the movies stories and themes.

I'd say new fans are probably scratching their heads about the modern comics vs. movie. A friend of mine named Jennifer saw the first film 7 times and read Extremis and liked it. I had her pick up Armor Wars and reportedly she loved it.
You can't go wrong with Michelinie and Layton's two runs (and subsequent minis), along with Byrne's 1990-92 run and Kaminski and Hopgood's legendary 92-94 run and Kaminski's still great run with Tom Morgan.

I'd say that The Inevitable and Enter the Mandarin are probably the two best stories you can give someone to start off with. They're both written with modern sensibilities but have that old comics charm to them.
