Because it gets old.  Spider-Man 3 had all the same characters, and too many new ones.  Same with X3.  We don't need to see Lex for a while, just a new villain and maybe have him do something new.  Like punching.  :-)

One word: Metallo.  There'd be lots of punching in that one.

Oh, and after reading that article, I see that the screenwriter who brought us Superman's bastard child is also penning the sequel.  Hoorah.  Long live the insipid...

If it wasn't for the plane sequence and the memories from the opening music, that movie would have sucked.
Wait. Let me rephrase.  That movie sucked, but the plane sequence and the nod to the old flicks were cool.

I liked the gatling gun sequence, too.  Other than that, you already mentioned the only salvageable parts of the movie.

The gatling scene was amazing. Plus the bullet in the eye bit.

Just one thing...seems like a heck on an installation to get that gatling and its mount in place on the roof top. I mean it would have to have been put in by a crane or serious cargo helicopter. Seems like a lot of firepower for a bank job too.

I thought it was more believable seeing the minigun/gatling on the roof like that (or is it vulcan gun??) vs. Jessie The Body Ventura using one in Predator, though it still kicked serious butt.

I think honchos at WB think that Superman's rogues gallery consists Lex Luthor and Lex Luthor. Metallo is a great suggestion. But seriously, c'mon WB folks... there are a plethora of villains to choose from: Doomsday, Bizzaro, Parasite just to name a few that wouldn't be lame nor would they be difficult to introduce to an unfamiliar audience.

I thought I remember reading an interview with Singer some time ago that Braniac was going to be used in the movie.

I may be misremembering but I think that was his contribution to the Superman Returns Game, along with Metallo.

Just because Luthor is in it, that doesn't mean he's the primary bad guy.  Remember Superman II?  Lex was in it but Zod was the main foe.

Oh, I didn't know that IJ!
I remember seeing the trailer for that game and thought it looked awesome, but I haven't had the money to ever pick it up.  It looks really good though.
