I actually like this idea.  I never liked the knaufs and am still looking forward to Powered armor battles.  If a guy named war machine doesn't own someone in every book, something is wrong.

Incredible Hercules is actually pretty good.  If War Machine can have similar results, I don't think anyone will mind.

I'll give the title a try.  I wasn't a big fan of Rhodey's first series but this could be different.

And hey, does that make the Fraction book vol #5 of Invincible Iron Man?

That could very well be.  The Marvel wiki stated that Zeke Stane was the main villain of volume five of Iron Man, so fortunately Invincible will be taking over as the next official volume.

Yep.  Confirmed today at the Mondo Marvel Panel was this interesting tidbit:

A slide of War Machine prompted Greg Pak to announce a new War Machine ongoing series, replacing Iron Man: Director of SHIELD after "Secret Invasion" and penciled by Leonard Manco.

"The book's going to be hard, period, core, period," said Pak, adding that he'll explore the humanity of James Rhodes. First issue should hit in December, according to Pak.

Y'know, I really wish I knew how to feel about this.  What Pak describes is essentially what the original series was supposed to be way back when, all of which went off the rails before we even got issue one out the door.  I ended up writing that book with three limbs tied behind my back and my tongue nailed to the ceiling.

So, on one hand I'm really glad that WM is finally going to get to kick all that overdue ass... but it's kinda like seeing another guy dance with your ex-girlfriend.

I'm hoping Pak and Manco will tear the joint apart, and I'll be too busy cheering to feel envious.

If you did that WM run being tied down so much, I can only imagine how good it would have been if you were given free reign. I loved the arc with the Rush Club, always up for to armor battles.

Were you given more free reign on the Iron Man title, or was it about the same limitations that were put on you?

I have information that contradicts the thread title! I recently sent an e-mail to Marvel with a couple questions about my subscriptions, and here's the relevant parts:

Quote from: Me
I have heard rumors that Iron Man: Director of SHIELD
will be ending with issue #35. When that happens, will I be given an
option to switch my subscription to another title? If, at that time, I
switch to the new upcoming War Machine comic, will it take effect early
enough to start with issue #1?

And this is their reply:

Quote from: Marvel
Iron Man: Director of S.H.I.E.L.D will not be discontinued.

If this is correct (and they're not just trying to save face as the cancellation hasn't been "officially" announced yet), then that is good news!

I'll keep my fingers crossed that the rumor that is circulating is true and the Knaufs will be returning, thus no cancellation.

I'm definitely looking forward to Tony leaving Shield behind!  The stories were not very engageing at all, add in the amount of in-fighting between him and Hill, and Dum-Dums' passive aggrasiveness and it was a very draining read.  What is needed is for Tony to concenctrate on his company, and in turn improvements to the armor.  I didn't care for his stint in politics either.  If nothing elese I wouldn't mind see another icarnation of the Avengers after this whole Secret invasion side bar has run it course.

As for JIm as WM, I am going to give it a try.  Up to this point a lot of effort has been given to making Jim independent of Tony.  If I'm not mistaken he even has his own company now.  I didn't enjoy the WM title first ran;  It didn't get a chance to run on its on merits, you always knew Tony would have the final say. If Jim would ever use the armor in a fight Tony didn't agree with, BAM overide, no to mention his dependance on Tony for routine maintance.  If nothing elese maybe Jim can commission Tony both as a friend and a would-be-hero to redesgn the WM armor.

Aww man.  I was hoping that they would discontinue DOS.  The stories really weren't enough to entertain me.

That's no reason to discontinue publication of a title.  They could, oh say, get another writer on the book with some fresh ideas, maybe?

I personally wouldn't mind if Christos Guage stayed on after the SI tie in (and keep Sean Chen there too, have you seen those preview pages?). He handled Tony really well in the Annual, and I don't think you'd get many complaints if every issue was more like that annual...

I have a few in mind that could take their place.  Smiley

My problem with the Knaufs was that their stories were too drama/plot driven. There just wasnt enough happening in each issue for me. I liked the fight with the Mandarin at the end, but it was too long coming. Plus the book suffered from bad colors that to me brought the entire story down because I felt it was so drab it was distracting (and I cant help but think of my letter that got published on Bob's site where he commented on how color was used in comics).

I actually liked having two titles, and I agree with Roger that disliking the writing isnt necessarily a reason to cancel a long time book, but more a reason just to change the writers.
